BEREAVEMENT
FINANCIAL ABUSE
Financial abuse, a subset of domestic abuse, centers on controlling an individual’s ability to acquire, use, and manage their own money. This form of abuse aims to instill or intensify financial instability within relationships. Characterized by a pattern of threatening and demeaning behaviors, it curtails a victim’s financial independence. Financial abuse manifests in various ways, including control, exploitation, and manipulation, and can occur in diverse relationships, such as those with intimate partners, family members, friends, or caregivers. Indicators that could help identify financial abuse include:
- Being stopped from working and/or getting education
- Being asked to account for every single thing you spent
- Being stopped from accessing your financial account
- Being controlled on how you spend your income
- Debt or credit was taken in your name without your knowledge and permission
